Guide to Internet Job Hunting - Using the Internet to Create a Resume

Creating Resumes for the Web

The Internet has revolutionized the way we find and apply for jobs. It's easier to find the jobs and easier to send an application over the Internet, and as a result, the volume of resumes received at human resources departments has almost doubled. It has now become so easy for people to apply for jobs that, in many cases, applicants are not always one hundred percent committed to their job application. If you really want the job, be prepared to really go after it. Ask yourself this question: How can you set yourself apart from the bunch?

The name of the game has always been creativity. And today, you have more resources at your fingertips than ever before. So how can you creatively display your skills through the application process?

For example, someone wanted dearly to get a position with a music industry public relations firm. He knew that he was going to have a hard time getting an interview unless he created a cover letter and resume that stood out from the rest. In order to display his writing abilities, and instead of writing a traditional cover letter, he wrote a press release cover letter that publicized his hiring at the company. He titled it, "Peter Smith Joins Publicity Corp. and Strengthens Internship Team." Along with the cover letter, he compiled a Web-based newsletter as a resume, including some pictures and articles that chronicled his work experience and education. Needless to say, he got an interview.

The folks at the company told him later that they passed the resume around the company to show a great example of creativity. They knew that anybody that put so much time and creativity into a resume like this really wanted the job.

There are many resources on the Web that offer help in creating resumes, but Berkleemusic explains how to create job-related materials specifically for the music and recording industry.
