TOPIC: Portable pianos with quality sound?

Portable pianos with quality sound? 1 Year, 6 Months ago
Hello everyone. I'm an amateur pianist and music teacher currently living in Japan. A friend of mine runs a local pub with live music twice a week and I want to start gigging there, but I would have to bring my own instrument. I'd like to purchase a decent portable keyboard with full-size and, if possible, weighted keys. It also needs to be light-weight enough for me to carry on the subway. The only thing I've found that comes close to this description is the Yamaha NP-30 Portable Grand and when I tried it out in the store it sounded a bit tinny. Is there anyone out there who is gigging with an NP-30, or who can recommend something better that weighs under 20 lbs.?

I would consider the Casio PX-110. I don't gig with it, but i easily could. I've taken it back and forth to different studios and it's fairly light compared to some other keyboards. It has a decent sound for a digital piano and it is very inexpensive. I've seen them on sale for as little as $400(US). It has 88 weighted keys and has served me well over the years. Hope this helps.
Good luck

I think the Yamaha is pretty good. I've also heard that there is an m-audio electric piano with weighted keys, but I haven't tried it out myself. good luck!

Nate, I had tried the Privia before and liked the sound. The way it was set up in the store, I didn't know it could detach from the frame it was in. Now I see it's 12 kg. which isn't so bad. Thanks for the heads up!

I had that exact Yamaha keyboard and didn't like it because it wasn't weighted keys. I recently bought a Roland FP-4 which is amazing for different tones and is also weighted keys. It's heavier than 20 lbs but I just got a case for it with wheels and it's pretty portable after that.

I owned a Privia for a while. I wish i still had it. It was a great feeling keyboard. As far as the built in speakers, they may not have enough juice for a live situation, and the only output is the headphone jack which, when I tried to record...sounded bad. I stuck with the MIDI instead. Good luck.
