Ears, how do I keep them safe? 4 Years, 3 Months ago
I play for a really loud rock band 8) but we're too loud and my ears are taking a hammering I tried using ear plugs, but that makes listening to the band and improv a bit tricky. How do the pros stop their ears from getting killed??

Thanks,
Seb

If you were using regular earplugs like you would buy at a drug store, these definitely aren't the best way to go. Musicians earplugs work pretty well. They reduce all frequencies more equally so you can still relate to the sound. You'll have to go to an audiologist to get them custom molded though. I use Etymotic ER15 for most occasions, and I swap in ER25's for the really loud stuff. The cost for these will be around $150, but I haven't checked lately. If you've got the cash to burn, you can get in-ear monitors instead, but you'll pay up to around $1000 depending on quality, if it is wireless, or if it uses custom molds.

Turn down the @!!*& volume, you dodo.

This is a competitive thing, and you are likely doing permanent damage to your hearing. Talk to some rock musicians in their 40s and 50s. They often express regret that they didn't take better care of their ears, when they were younger.

Also, excessive volume is often a way of masking weaknesses in the music. Add more periods of relative quiet. It will make the louder sections seem relatively louder, if there's more variety in the arrangement.

I quit doing that a while ago.
It was ruining my voice.
