How do you cover a bass without a bassist? 3 Years, 5 Months ago
I have a band in Alaska; piano, bass, drums, and sax. Our bass player just moved to Portland and it's not easy to find a good bass player in my town. Although I'd rather have a real bass player, what options are out there for coving the bass without one? Thanks.

Well, the piano has to do it when the Sax is playing solo, and may be
the sax could help when the piano is soloing. It would be interesting to experiment with a baryton sax if your sax player has one! 8)

Thanks for the reply, Claude. Unfortunately, I don't have a bari. I played one for many years in the Air Force band but it belonged to them. Now I play with alto, tenor, and soprano. The piano player will be doing it for now. I exchanged email with the bass player from Zilla and he had some good suggestions for using a sampler/synth to create the sounds and play them. I'll work with that and see what happens.
Thanks again,
Steve

Oh!!!! Another idea! If the pianist has played organ before you could
have a pedal bass (I've seen that long time ago, it's similar to the
organ pedals) and he could play the bass lines with the real sound (well
almost) with his feet while playing with his two hands on the piano. I
don't know how much you like to improvise but I fear that a sampler will
not give you enough freedom!

All the best!

Yes, I was looking a the Roland pedal bass. PK-5 I think. And I agree about the sampler. We want lots of freedom when we play. Just found a band without a bass; "Fieldwork" from New York.

Thanks again,
Steve

hey i am a piano/organ/sax player and i quite often find myself without a bass player for gigs and sessions and stuff. I just use two keyboards next to each other in an "L" shape. Left hand bass, right hand melody/chords/improv. seems to work out for me.
