TOPIC: Contract with a manager
#16045
Contract with a manager 4 Years, 6 Months ago
Hey all, I am the guitar player in a band, and I just had this guy come up to me with a contract and all. He says he wants to manage us and its making it sound all pretty. I'm curious as to what I should watch out for before I sign with this guy and sdtart thinking I'm on a roll. I'd really appreciate it if any of you could possibly give me some advice as to what to look for in the contract and what questions to ask him. Itd be interesting to see what experiences also someof you may have had. myabe I'm just being paranoid or something and there is not much to it.

thanks,
Jaime

You should not have to sign a contract with a manager unless he is investing money that benefits or furthers your project. He should represent you and find you work, take a percentage (20%) off of the payment on the gig.

Hey Kenn,
thanks for the reply. it seems that this guy is willing to invest into the band in different ways. I guess a contract would be logical for that kind of deal. I still haven't come up with a definitive answer for him. He also wants to sign each member of the goup individually. he says that its in case one of us decies to leave the group later in the middle of the contract. I wonder if this is really just a sketchy situation. maybe you could say something about that.
I appreciate the time to read this post. if anyone thinks something about this, i'd be happy to hear it.

thanks lots,
Jaime

Creating a contract with each individual in a performing group is a common practice. Consider how long the contract term is you do not want to sign with someone you do not know for more than a year. It will be renewable after the first term, and you might have more leverage to renegotiate the deal and get more of what you want. You must prove yourself first though.

Quite interesting.. do you know this person? Have you seen him at shows? What are his credentials? Did he give you a card? If he did, he might be with a managment company. I would look into that.

I haven't seen many people come to shows with a contract unless they have seen or heard you before. If you have been out on the cicuit for a while, it's possible. I would just check out where works or who he works with. There is no reason you can't ask questions.. this is about YOUR life. If there is any defensiveness or something you think is fishy.. I would walk. just my two cents! 8)

I agree with Kathy. That's ridiculous. Unless you already have a record deal and the manager is well known in the entertainment industry, both by your label and your attorney, you should not sign a managment agreement with a stranger until you know them well (or at least their reputation) and have established some sort of relationship with them. Investigate. Who else does the manager represent, etc.?
