Can someone give me a short tutorial on the percentages a writer gets for a written piece of music he submits to a publisher for printing?
Also, if someone co-writes the lyrics to a piece aand translates it
what percentage should they get?
Also on another topic, in a CD production, what percentage does the producer get, if any of incoming hard sales revenue and how is it computed.Or should he get any? Or is it a flat rate? An example might help me visualize this. It all seems nebulous to me.

All up for negotiation. Everyone in the process wants to make enough to make it worth them getting out of bed and making it happen. So their starting position is always going to be full on. If you can get the ball rolling and offer them something that's already happening it gets a whole lot easier to negotiate what you want. People want paying for the contacts they have, the doors they can open. Often they will tell you they can do things they can't. The more you can create, make happen, open your own doors, create your own vibe, the more you get to control and creat your own income.

Ask yourself - who's more motivated - you - or someone on 10% who has 20 other guys like you on their books? This is a great time to start promoting yourself - there's a new business model out there and everything is changing. Don't rely on what worked 5 years ago. Read some Anthony Robbins (or something like it) and just get into action.

You should checkout "All You Need To Know About The Music Business" by Donald Passman.

It is in its 6th edition. Donald explains all of the team breakdown in detail as well as all of the "gotchas" you need to be aware of.
