TOPIC: How old is too old?
#27578
How old is too old? 2 Weeks, 3 Days ago
Are you ever too old to start learning? I am 37 years old and have surrounded myself with music for most of my life. I am a self-taught guitarist but would like to extend my skill levels to feel comfortable performing in front of people.

Goals are to build on my lead guitar skills (improvising, blues guitar). Would love to get good enough to start providing lessons to beginner guitarists.

Am considering the online courses but always have this feeling that I'm too old to get this train rolling. Would like to hear from anyone else about my age or older that is also considering the online courses.

Thanks

Of course not. You are learning everyday...

I'm 42 started Critical Listening 1 this semester. I've learned tons. Would recommend it to anyone. Will be taking more next semester.

Think of it this way. Say you'll live to 80 (of course hopefully much longer)...you aren't even half way there yet and image how much time has already passed in your life and now imagine how much can can get done in the next 40 years. A few in that scheme of time is worth it.

Well........... I am 54 and I just completed Rock Bass online and I loved it. I am enrolling in the R&B Bass Class online next semester. I guess I am not too old, LOL!

Good Luck

Jack

I'm 31 and already have a Master's Degree in music composition from a different school (Crane School of Music, SUNY-Potsdam). I taught middle school through high school and burned out fairly quick after 5 years. Now I'm teaching piano privately and love every minute of it. I signed up for the sound design course partly for required credits for my teaching license (just in case I ever change my mind). I'm actually learning a lot of new things and actually having to WORK at something I thought I'd just breeze through. It's also helping me think differently about my compositions. So it doesn't matter how old you are or how much education you already have behind you. It's always a good time to learn new things!

I just turned 50, and just earned my Bass Specialist certificate. And I am now pressing forward with more training in other areas. I am doing great in all my classes and enjoying every minute of them. So in my opinion, no, you are never too old!
