need help mxing low ends in hip hop 8 Months, 1 Week ago
What up Berklee, im having some serious issues mixing the low ends in some of my beats. The kick and bass sound muddy. any help? i can send u the session so u can hear it if needed. It sounds ok, but not professional yet. I've taken mixing and mastering with pro tools, and now the advance class and its helped out a lot, but before I go to my instructer, i wanted to get some advice from ya'll. any ideas? You can also email me at hits.dibeats@gmail.com or call me 210-324-6935. Thanks a lot

hey there! I'd be glad to help you out man! I've been mixing for quite a while, and I can offer to help if it makes any difference. I do have protools, but if I can export your track and work on my other nuendo station, that would be great for me, will make my life a whole lot easier! so if there's anything I can do to help, mail me your material at ksinno@hotmail.com and I'll see what I can do...

Yeah, send me the beat and I'll go over it and tell you step by step whats up. You can send it in wave or mp3 each trk or what ever and mix it and send back. Glad to help.

Harold, you'll want to make sure that bass and kick are not interfering - When deep frequency material interferes, it can sound very muddy, very quicky. Try cutting everything below 80-90 Hz on the kick drum. Also, put a sidechain compressor on the bass, chained to the kick drum so that when the kick drum kicks in, the bass will be lowered, making room for the deep frequency material of the kick. In addition, a few problematic frequencies when dealing with bass: 120-130 Hz and 300-350 Hz. Use EQ to lower these areas if they are giving you trouble. I hope that helped!

If things sound muddy, you need to separate them. One way to get separation is to use panning. Put the kick and snare on two different tracks if they are already mixed into one track. Pan the kick a little to the left, and pan the snare track a little to the right. You'll have to re-record your beats to get the drums on seperate tracks.

In fact, you can pan the snare a lot to the side or even have more than one snare sound, each one panned to a different position if you want a more sophisticated sound.

The kick drum shound be pretty close to center. It also helps to double the kick with another kick drum sound on a different track. The more variation in sounds, panning and EQ, the more you can control the mix.

And then you have EQ. When each drum is on a different track, you can give them separate EQ which will really seperate them. Personally I like a really crunchy snare so I give it high mids, low bass and treble. Just play with the panning and EQ until you find the seperation you are looking for.
