Buying a Mac..How much processing speed do I need? 6 Months, 2 Weeks ago
Ok, so I'm about to buy my first Macbook Pro and want some advice...

I'm undecided between the 15" and 17" models.

They all come with 4GB of ram, but the processor speeds vary between 2.66, 2.8 and 3.06.

My primary use is with ProTools LE 8 (Mbox2), and plugins including Reason, Absynth, Amplitube.

So, my question is, considering the huge difference in price between the different specs, how much will I really notice the difference with the extra processing speed?

Consider the 17 inch, 3.06GHz. With the express card slot you will be able to use an e-sata card and
record all you audio to an external HD.
Install all your software on the main HD and record on the external one.
Amplitude tax your computer quite a bit and this set up will be very efficient. You dont want to run your audio
tracks and samples and software from the same HD.
There is no express card slot in the 15 inch so you are limited to start with.
For $500 more vs basic model +HD and $19.00 express card ( macsales.com) you will be set for a long time.
In summary: all software install on main HD, audio interface on the FW 800 port and e-sata-card into the express card slot
to external HD.
Good luck.

In the case of using a USB Mbox2 then the FW 800 can be use for the external HD to record audio.
Later if you get a better audio interface( FW) then the previous set up will be optimal.

Any Macbook pro will run protoosl just fine, I use both a 17" pro with a 2.4 ghz processor, and I also use a 13" Macbook with a 1.8 ghz processor, both with only 2gb of ram. Just make sure you have money set aside for a fast hard drive, maybe a 1 tb Glyph ( about $400 -- Good luck and have fun!

I am successfully using a MacBook Pro 15 with 2.8GHz and both the Digi 003 and an external hard drive connected to the firewire port with Pro Tools LE.
