Past Student Spotlights

Berkleemusic's students come from more than 75 countries around the world. While their backgrounds are diverse, our online students are united by a passion for music and a common goal to become better musicians.

Tuhin Mehta
After 10 years as a successful DJ in India, Tuhin Mehta was looking for a way to add a new level of excitement to his set. The Producing Music with Ableton Live online course provided the creative spark he needed. “From the very first interaction I had with Berkleemusic I felt like I was at home,” explains Tuhin. “Everyone here has been extremely helpful and supportive. And more importantly, the course has helped me to push harder with my music.”

Mike Dreese - Newbury Comics
Decades after successful businessman Mike Dreese had finished his marketing studies at M.I.T., he decided to go back to school – but this time he chose a virtual classroom.

Rick Breen
"Getting my position with Kurzweil would not have been possible without the training I received through Berkleemusic," says Berkleemusic Alum Rick Breen.

Del Couch
"Who says an old dog can't learn new tricks?" says Berkleemusic.com student Del Couch. After 20 years as a successful real estate agent, the 56-year old enrolled online and now owns and operates a successful home studio where he records local musical greats Graeme Edge (drummer for the Moody Blues), Duck Dunn, (bass player with Booker T. and the MGs), and Dickie Betts of Allman Brothers fame.

Kristen Henderson - Antigone Rising
Kristen Henderson, guitarist and vocalist of the band Antigone Rising, recently completed the Blues Guitar Workshop. Henderson studied online while in the midst of a grueling tour schedule which included opening for The Rolling Stones earlier this year.

Laura Day
"By the end of Music Publishing 101 I was fully prepared to start my own music publishing company. I feel like I have acquired a lifetime's worth of industry knowledge and business experience in a single class."

Scott Underwood - Train
Since their 1994 formation in San Francisco, the group Train has grown steadily as a locomotive force in music. Train is currently in the writing and pre-production mode for their much anticipated fourth album. The band's talented drummer/composer Scott Underwood has been studying online at Berkleemusic.com and has incorporated his new skills into Train's collaborative composition style.

Jim Blaney
What’s life without taking some chances? After owning and operating a successful dentist practice in Gainsville, Fla., Jim Blaney decided to pack up his family, pursue his musical dream of getting a publishing deal, and follow his muse to Music City USA – Nashville.

Victor Minetola
"When I first heard about the Berkleemusic.com classes, I got very excited. I saw opportunities to become better and more efficient at what I do. I could work in my own home studio, on my own time, with an instructor and other students to share experiences and their critiques."

James Linderman
James teaches guitar to 75 students a week in Ontario, Canada, and is a well regarded music journalist. "Finding time to go to school was impossible, so online learning was my only option, and a terrific one," he recalls.

Bob Klein
By day, Bob Klein is a products liability defense lawyer and a partner in the Maryland-based firm of Wharton Levin Ehrmantraut & Klein, P.A. He is also a baby boomer with a wife and three children in college. Don't let that fool you! When the sun goes down, Attorney Klein breaks out his musical instruments and recording gear, and puts his new-found songwriting knowledge to work.

Pete Nenortas
Having moonlighted for years with his own company Satronen Sound doing studio and live on-location recording, Pete Nenortas found himself at an occupational crossroads. Was his brother right — was music just a hobby? Or can it be a means to a more fulfilling end?

Dr. Trey
It’s easy to imagine music students procrastinating on their homework by fantasizing about the day when they are professional musicians, accepting a major award amid a flurry of applause. For Trey Terada, who took nearly a dozen online courses through Berkleemusic, the dream became a reality when he won the Hawaii Music Award’s People’s Choice Award for Rhythm & Blues Album of the Year.
