Professional Certificate
Studio Production5 Courses (15 credits)
![]() Learn to create, produce and record music using Pro Tools and Reason, and develop your ability to hear and identify the key features of a well balanced, artful and professional-sounding mix. The five-course Professional Studio Production Certificate begins by providing a primer on recording, editing, and basic mixing techniques using Pro Tools – knowledge students can apply to any number of different software programs. Following that, students will become exposed to more advanced mixing and mastering techniques using Pro Tools, including parallel compression, reverb parameters and compression. The program also covers in-depth production and mixing techniques for contemporary electronic music styles, including hip-hop, industrial, pop/rock, and house by exploring the capabilities of MIDI sequencing using Reason. Students will become adept at using Reason's rack of virtual instruments, effects, mixers, built-in sequencer and patching system, and learn the real-world production setups and techniques used by today's top producers. To pull all these production elements together, students will learn to develop their critical listening capabilities. Through weekly training drills, analysis of classic recordings, and comparative studies of different styles of mixing, they’ll learn to identify width and depth, frequency range, dynamics and the different mix approaches used in various musical genres.
